M~
Lee is crazy to find out ANYTHING about G.H. "Hub" Kyser from Selma.

Anything you can do will be appreciated.

best,

SELMA'S Hub Kyser ~ Captain of the University of Alabama Second Football Team of 1893 (ed. note: Instead of wearing helmets, they let their hair grow long during the off season.)

Here's the stats on the CRIMSON TIDE'S 1892 team, the frist team, from Lee Pake's '93 Corolla!

Hub Kyser is #17

Cadet G.H. Kyser
Kyser scored a touchdown on a 50 yd. run in BAMA's first game played under inter-collegiate rules against a B'ham high school team on November 11, 1892. BAMA won 56 to 0.

Robert,
I hear through M. that you are looking for info about 'Hub' Kyser. He was George Herbert Kyser, b. 9/23/1874. His parents were Dr. George Washington Kyser and Sallie Patton of Carlowville in south Dallas county. There were many, many members of this family who lived in the Carlowville area - still a few there. And there are many descendants still in Dallas Co. and elsewhere in Alabama.
Hub Kyser lived in Selma as an adult and had a drugstore. He and his wife Adabelle Moore had 4 children. The youngest daughter Sarah married R.R. Miree of Birmingham who started Miree Construction Co. Hub's grandsons still live in Birmingham.

Hope you are well!
Anne

Anne,
Thank you so much.

I suspected that Kyser Miree was related to Hub. He's the young man who was murdered in Mobile back in April.

Robert Register Here's something else from the Pake Realty Archives ~ Timothy Leary's Senior portrait from the '43 Corolla. He got his degree in Psychology from BAMA that spring.

Robert Register Ramsey was right! "Timothy Leary; Theta Chi : Springfield, Mass.; Arts and Sciences" is pictured on page 117 of the '43 Corolla. "Ramsey Neil Metcalf; Pi Kappa Alpha: Hartford; Law" is on page 118.

Robert Register The cover of the '43 Corolla. I knew playing quarterback had to be good for something.

Hi Roberto,

I was in Tuscaloosa in school, a couple of years ahead of you--probably overlapping you a bit. I think we were friends with some of the same people, including Marshal Hagler. I have wondered over the years what happened to Art Schilling, where he was, etc., and sad to came across the fact that he died. Very sorry to hear that. Can you tell me what happened to him--how he died and when?

Thank you.

Best,
T

FROM BRUCE:

I do not know any details of his death. I only learned that he died sometime after he played the deputy sheriff in the movie with Lou Gossett being the sheriff in rural south with the flying nun starring in the lead role.

Got the movie stuff wrong. Holly Hunter was the female lead and Richard Widmark was the sheriff in the movie "A gathering of old men" Gossett played the black handy man and Art was the racist deputy sheriff. Small role, but he was able to portray all the redneck racist that he grew up with in Alabama. I got a pic of him by Marshal.

Robert,

Sorry I attached a bad pic. Here is a better(?) one of Art Schilling (left) and Charlie Hayward.

Did you get the email that Art died in 2003 of cancer?

Bruce
