RR~

I just LOVE it when "pissin' contests" get started at Zero!

You certainly know how to stir up shit...and come out smelling like a rose!

It looks like you got your cowboy outfit at a younger age than I did. I had to wait until my 6th birthday to get mine! See attached...

BQ~

Hahahaha!

I know that's from J...

and I ain't tellin' nobody!

I'm sure D. is having a ball out in C. (or where ever he is) telling all his friends what a big whoop-dee-doo in his younger days.

Let him rest on his laurels, whether they be real or not...they obviously are in his little mind!!

BQ

Walked in this morning to see the boss and said, " Hate to say it but one of our tenants committed suicide & what's bad is he did it Friday and we found him yesittiddee."

BOSS MAN
sayid,"Had he paid his rent?"

Hello Robert,

My name is Bruce Schurman
and I am sending this note all the way from North Gower, Ontario, Canada.

That's just outside the nations capital city of Ottawa. The reason for the note is Eddie Hinton. For the past couple of years I have been gathering information and slowly writing a book about Eddie. How I got hooked on Eddie is a whole other story, suffice it to say that my journey has taken, and is taking, some interesting twists an turns. Everytime that I think there are no more leads or information, something pops up. I stumbled across your Zero, Northwest Florida blogspot and have discovered much information and connections to Eddie. Most have been interesting and helpful. It wasn't until I came across one of your own postings from 2004 that I discovered that you knew Eddie personally. It had something to do with you spending time with Eddie at the Chukker and Egan's in Tuscaloosa. I am guessing that that must have been around the mid to late '80's. Your posting also talked about John Curry. John is a great guy and has become a friend over the past few years, helping me with my research on Eddie and the Spooks. Last year I was able to travel to Alabama and meet and spend time with many of Eddie's old friends. John was one of those friends and he took the time to visit with me and also give me a tour of Tuscaloosa and the places that Eddie frequented as well as where he rests at Tuscaloosa Memorial Cemetary. It wasn't until I decided to write to you that I noticed that you are in Northport. I then realized your connection with John. As I said, I was in Alabama last year and was able to do the bulk of my research through in-person interviews but there were still so many that I have done through e-mail or telephone conversations. When you mentioned that, "Back in the mid 80s, Eddie was living in Tuscaloosa and we hung out together at the Chukker and Egan's." , well, this was new information. No one had previously mentioned to me that Eddie had returned to live in Tuscaloosa for a short period. I was wondering if you would be willing to share your memories of Eddie with me. It would be most helpful, especially as there are so many discrepencies about where he was from around 1985 until his death, ten years later. He was either a recluse, much of the time, or a bit of a nomad. It's hard to get answers because he was on his own so much. If you are interested, we could converse via e-mail or I could phone you for an interview, at your convenience. One last thing. You also mentioned that "Bruce Hopper, who owned the Chukker at the time, has a lot a details about that episode in Eddie's life". Would you have a contact e-mail or phone number for him? Thanks very much for your time, Robert and I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards, Bruce Schurman

BS~

Eddie TOLD me during a Happy Hour conversation that he had moved back to Tuscaloosa.
I wrote that post on my blog from my foggy memory before I talked to Bruce Hopper about the details of Eddie's gig at the Chukker.

Eddie came into the Chukker one afternoon before his gig and he and I drove around town in his Cadillac and went down to Egan's for a beer before returning to the Chukker. During that entire time, Eddie gave me the impression he was back in town to stay.

He stayed all right but I'm pretty sure it was overnight at Bruce's house.

Bruce is absolutely one of the greatest resources in Tuscaloosa concerning Eddie Hinton.

I am forwarding this email to him.

best,
rr

Hello Robert,
Thanks for the quick response and also for the introduction to Bruce Hopper.
It's very much appreciated. I will look forward to talking with him.
Do you have any stories of your own about that day you spent with Eddie, or any other Eddie memories?
Regards,
Bruce

B~

Harry Hammond here in Tuscaloosa is the cat you ought to talk to. He's about the same age as Eddie and he still has a scar where Eddie stabbed him inside the ruins of the old SAE house on the corner of 12th Avenue & University Boulevard with a spear made out of a broken iron picket off of an iron cemetery fence.

Talk to Johnny Townsend too. (Sanford-Townsend Band SMOKE FROM A DISTANT FIRE) He and Eddie were managers of Harry Hammond's undefeated Tuscaloosa Black Bear basketball team.

Emphasize the early days of Eddie. The later years were the pits.

best,
rr

Thanks, Robert.
I have talked to both Harry and John and they were both very encouraging and offered up lots of memories of their days with Eddie.

I am very aware of Eddie's personality shifts and how they effected his life, and also of the great music that he was able to make, in spite of it. I am trying to tell the whole story of his life and show that despite all the adversity he faced, whether it be through his own actions or the actions of others, the one thing that he could do was still write and play amazing music, most of which had a positive outlook on life, even if his own life was in tatters. This is what I find to be the most compelling aspect of his life and this is the Eddie that want people to know about.

I just received an e-mail from Bruce Hopper, yesterday and he has invited me to contact him, so I thank you for the introduction. Hopefully Bruce will be able to fill in some of the blanks in Eddie's story.

Regards,
Bruce

Robert
I don't know how Tommy Mann could forget the minor details of who secured the Dothan Rec Center, who put the spots on WAGF for gigs in Dothan, Ozark, Andalusia, and a few other places WAGF would reach, but it seems he has. I know it's been over 40 years ago, but I have no reason to lie. I guess he also forgot the 15% of the gate I was paid (and also collected), the off duty policeman, all the details he couldn't do, without coming to Dothan, himself.
Dink was hired shortly after what time I spent with the group, and was a person I didn't care for, so I eased away, after one scary ride with him hauling the equipment from one place to another.
I never claimed to be any sort of booking agent: I just did the local stuff, in and around Dothan, involving maybe 5 or 6 gigs. Maybe a few of the others have a better recollection of these things; after all, I was 17, and certainly not taking credit for anything I had not done.
I also did the same exact thing for the Rockin Gibraltars, in and around Dothan. Gratefully, one or two seem to remember.
My recollections are of life on the road, all the good times, what fun we all had, and nothing more. I'm not interested in a "pissing contest" with an old man.

Ain't no sense where I'm from.

If I had religion, I'd know right from wrong.

I was born up in trouble.
Ain't no sense where I'm gone.

If I had religion, I'd know right from wrong.
