I thought this was very well said!

Back on Uncle Sam's plantation
Star Parker - Syndicated Columnist

Six years ago I wrote a book called Uncle Sam's Plantation. I wrote the book to tell my own story of what I saw living inside the welfare state and my own transformation out of it.

I said in that book that indeed there are two Americas -- a poor America on socialism and a wealthy America on capitalism.

I talked about government programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training (JOBS), Emergency Assistance to Needy Families with Children (EANF), Section 8 Housing, and Food Stamps.

A vast sea of perhaps well-intentioned government programs, all initially set into motion in the 1960s, that were going to lift the nation's poor out of poverty.

A benevolent Uncle Sam welcomed mostly poor black Americans onto the government plantation. Those who accepted the invitation switched mindsets from "How do I take care of myself?" to "What do I have to do to stay on the plantation?"

Instead of solving economic problems, government welfare socialism created monstrous moral and spiritual problems -- the kind of problems that are inevitable when individuals turn responsibility for their lives over to others.

The legacy of American socialism is our blighted inner cities, dysfunctional inner city schools, and broken black families.

Through God's grace, I found my way out. It was then that I understood what freedom meant and how great this country is.

I had the privilege of working on welfare reform in 1996, passed by a Republican Congress and signed 50 percent.

I thought we were on the road to moving socialism out of our poor black communities and replacing it with wealth-producing American capitalism.

But, incredibly, we are going in the opposite direction.

Instead of poor America on socialism becoming more like rich American on capitalism, rich America on capitalism is becoming like poor America on socialism.

Uncle Sam has welcomed our banks onto the plantation and they have said, "Thank you, Suh."

Now, instead of thinking about what creative things need to be done to serve customers, they are thinking about what they have to tell Massah in order to get their cash.

There is some kind of irony that this is all happening under our first black president on the 200th anniversary of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.

Worse, socialism seems to be the element of our new young president. And maybe even more troubling, our corporate executives seem happy to move onto the plantation.

In an op-ed on the opinion page of the Washington Post, Mr. Obama is clear that the goal of his trillion dollar spending plan is much more than short term economic stimulus.

"This plan is more than a prescription for short-term spending -- it's a strategy for America 's long-term growth and opportunity in areas such as renewable energy, healthcare, and education."

Perhaps more incredibly, Obama seems to think that government taking over an economy is a new idea. Or that massive growth in government can take place "with unprecedented transparency and accountability."

Yes, sir, we heard it from Jimmy Carter when he created the Department of Energy, the Synfuels Corporation, and the Department of Education.

Or how about the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 -- The War on Poverty -- which President Johnson said "...does not merely expand old programs or improve what is already being done. It charts a new course. It strikes at the causes, not just the consequences of poverty.."

Trillions of dollars later, black poverty is the same. But black families are not, with triple the incidence of single-parent homes and out-of-wedlock births.

It's not complicated. Americans can accept Barack Obama's invitation to move onto the plantation. Or they can choose personal responsibility and freedom.

Does anyone really need to think about what the choice should be?

"The trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money."
Nancy "We do not stop playing because we grow old;
We grow old because we stop playing.

Wanted to let you know that this girl is right on the money but remember that May was the fifth anniversary of Bill Cosby's speech before the NAACP & that IMPORTANT 21ST CENTURY anniversary was not mentioned by ANYONE!

The neck six month gonna be HELL!

Johnny Depp

Johnny DeppAKA John Christopher Depp, Jr.

Born: 9-Jun-1963
Birthplace: Owensboro, KY

Gender: Male
Race or Ethnicity: White [1]
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Actor

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: Captain Jack Sparrow

Johnny Depp started smoking at 12, and played guitar in a rock band called The Flame. He lost his virginity to a groupie at 13, in the band's van. His parents divorced when Depp was in high school, and Depp soon dropped out to pursue music full-time. Rechristened The Kids and later Six Gun Method, the band moved to Los Angeles, and had their biggest moment as an opening act for Iggy Pop. Depp struggled to get by, but eventually met Nicolas Cage, who suggested he try auditioning for film and TV work. His first major role was in A Nightmare on Elm Street, as a young boy plagued by bad dreams. Depp sprang to fame in the lead role on the upstart Fox network's first show, 21 Jump Street, playing a baby-faced cop recruited to infiltrate high schools and young criminals' gangs. At the time, 21 Jump Street was Fox's biggest (and only) hit, but Depp abhorred being a "teen heartthrob" and left after three seasons.

Depp often takes roles in darker films, appearing as a robotic topiarist in Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ed Wood in Ed Wood (1994), and Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Other roles tend to play more on his looks, such as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003).

He had "Winona forever" tattooed on his arm while engaged to Winona Ryder. After they broke up he had the tattoo reworked to read "Wino forever". Depp owned the nightclub where River Phoenix overdosed in 1993. He now lives in France.

[1] Slightly more than 1/8th Cherokee mostly via his maternal great-grandmother, Minnie, the remainder being various European ethnicities. My son, Christopher, took that picture of the spitting cobra.
It is scary.
The old man who handled the snake yelled at the snake and slapped it but allowed it to crawl all over him.

Pure death.

What a show!

The Rocker~

Sorry to hear about Sam Jones.
I think he's been sick a long time.
As I think you know, I was in the alcoholic beverage business for 29 years.
I met Sam about 25 years ago and suspected the accent was an Alabama accent. He was working for the Almaden winery, and came by our office for a meeting. I introduced myself, and asked where he was from. When he said in that distinguishable voice "A small town in Alabama called Dothan" I was going to rattle off some of the names I knew to see if we had any friends in common.
I knew he was younger than me, so the first name I mentioned was the former Laura Scott.

"She lived right behind me on ?????? street (Osceola?)"

When I heard that, we spent the next hour or so talking about some common friends, before we even got around to our eventual meeting.
I wish that I'd stayed in touch with him. But, I did hear about the great things that were happening in his career, as well as stories about his health.
Sam was a good, and well respected guy in a pretty tough business.
Peace, Sam...........

In the summer of '83, I stayed with Scott Gellerstedt at his place at La Playa in Reddington Shores.
Scott worked as a salesman for Tampa Crown & we visited Sam at his house. Sam had cases of wine in storage he had bought from his own company so that he could win sales contests. He'd do anything to win. When he lost his health he was living in a luxury apartment in Hong Kong working as Guinness' sales manager for all of Asia. Gellerstedt flew to Hong Kong to hang out with him and live "the good life."

Great finally meeting you at the mural thing.

Always great to publish your reminiscences.

Ha, my brother designed that Bonnie Raitt/Jackson Browne poster and still has the original match print, framed, no less. Very cool — the Crimson White stuff I remember very well

Mr. Robert,

I was googleing my name and found your blog site. I noticed you mentioned cooper creek and that it ran through the Rube Lewis property. That land actually belongs to my father Ray Lewis of Lewis Family Dairy. His father was George Elbert Lewis (Rube Lewis). I was wondering where you got "Rube Lewis property" from. Did you know my grandfather?

I also noticed you mentioned Creels pond. Creels pond shows up on google earth when when places of intrest is clicked. However, Creels pond doesn't exist anymore it was removed in order to install an irrigation system. so i guess you knew the Creels then.

Glad you found my blog.

I left Dothan in '68 but I remember your grandfather because he was one of my Daddy's customers.

My father was Earl Register and he was a partner in Jack Wise Tire Co.

A.C. Creel was another one of Daddy's best customers. I knew Jerry and Dwight too.
I grew up on the Creel property. My brother-in-law, Buddy Henry, has two farms near you: one is on Fowler Road and the other is on Lucy Grade & Cowarts Creek.

Buddy also sent us images of two beavers he & Wildman rescued out of the mud from the Creel Pond which has now dried up. Some of y'all may recollect the story I told about two of my Daddy's speed freak friends, Radio & Rabbit Man, helping us seine this pond.

Wildman & the beavers at the Creel Pond
Buddy & Wildman released the beavers unharmed into the big spring at Bud & Bec's
