Just learned the book signing event will take place at 7 PM just before the concert at the Civic Center. Wilbur said he will be there, so with Greg Haynes that makes three of us; Bill J. Moody will stop by but can't participate since his station isn't promoting the thing. Come on by and meet Greg and Bill J. if you haven't already----

YES!

J.R. LOVED BUTTERMILK AND ZERO CANDYBARS!
WE ALSO LIKED A DRINK J.R. CAME UP WITH!

IT WAS CALLED "A POSSUM SWEAT".

THE INGREDIENTS WERE A SHOT OF GIN, BUTTERMILK, AND A TWIST OF TURNIP!

THERE WERE LOTS MORE!

WILL FILL YOU IN LATER!

JD:

I am getting out of here as soon as possible Friday morning so I might be in Dothan before 3 so count me in on some of Friday afternoon's activities.

I was thinking about inviting somebody to the show but my brother Bill and his wife Katherine are coming to the show so I'm holding that ticket in case something GOOD happens Friday afternoon.

HAVE MERCY!!!!

I'm bringing my book so I definitely want Bill J. to sign the page with the WBAM poster & any page with the Gibraltars on it.

Get this, Jimmy Dean: This afternoon I'm recovering from Mardi Gras while tuning up a tin roof shack overlooking lovely Possum Holler out in Holt for a Section 8 inspection set for Tuesday afternoon when I get a call from Buie. He wanted to talk about SNAKE DOCTOR http://snakedoctor.blogspot.com

One of my characters in the novel has a unique hangover cure: A quart of buttermilk and a Zero candy bar. Buie said it blew his mind because on the road everybody always ragged J.R. because his favorite breakfast was , you guessed it, A ZERO AND A QUART OF BUTTERMILK!

Buie asked , " Is that some kinda "THING" ?

Looking forward to seeing y'all Friday. See if Bill J. can get THE DAY BEAR BRYANT DIED CD played at sound check. http://www.daybeardied.com/ before the show with Percy Sledge http://www.psledge.com/ , the Tams http://www.theoriginaltams.net/ and the Swingin' Medallions http://www.medallions.com/

Looks like Greg and Norma Marion are showing up for a HEEEY BABY DAYS OF BEACH MUSIC book signing before the show. http://heybabydays.com

Robert---You coming down for the concert this weekend? Bill J. Moody asked me if you were. He said he would like to finally meet you and thought we could get together at the Civic center Friday afternoon before the show, and he's got tickets for the show. I'll email Greg Haynes and see if he is coming down.

Hey y'all:
Times have changed.
The kewl thang is that us old silverbacks & our girls are damn ready to tell our story!

http://snakedoctor.blogspot.com
SNAKE DOCTOR is my fictional vision of Dothan. It's a combination of the DAHTHUM SH*8TY & Marianna, Chattahoochee w/ a little T-town & B'ham throwed in.

If you have an interest in DIRT, you gonna like dis!

The following is a sampling of the feedback which is simply TALKING TRASH which is SOMETHING we do so well!

I gotta say it. I love THE DAY BEAR BRYANT CD.

Folks real close to me have said things about this CD that make me want to go do something crazy.
You ever watch COPS and see how it takes five guys to put ONE cat down. That's because in most cases that cat has never been put down. That's a problem.

A lotta folks never had their ass whipped.

I fix up Section 8 housing.
I ain't got no reason to go out looking for trouble.

Take a break and check this P.S. out!

p.s.
Heh..Heh...P. is/was a friend of my 1st husband. That's how I know P. In '79 R. & I were moving to Baton Rouge, P. offered his assistance in packing & loading our truck. Well, he didn't assist for too long, cause he was such a pain in the ass...whining & complaining, that pretty soon R. cussed him out & told him to leave. It was soooo funny!!
I knew that B. father was in some sort of trouble, but didn't know what. Does P. even have a job now? Or does he just keep up the family tradition of stealing?! I know that he finally talked a nurse named ? into marrying him several years ago...don't know if that's still on or not. You gotta admit that P. was a lazy ass hanger-on obnoxious SOB!! And where is B. now? In prison? I remember that little house behind the old dealership that B. lived in

I DO remember the Beauty Shop being trashed, now that you mention it. But I don't remember the fish under the house. THESE WERE GROWN MEN?!! How funny.

Yeah, I remember J...Mom of A., J, & M.? (Was that her name?) J. got a corvette when we were Seniors at DHS & during AEA @ PC, B. & M. had a bad wreck in it on the Hathaway Bridge. M. died a few days later & B. has mush for brains now. He was the one driving. We went to see that car at the wrecker place & it looked like a crumpled coke can. Sad. And M's girlfriend at the time, B., was staying with us at The F. being "chaperoned" by my aunt & uncle. The same ones who used to take us to the Big BAM shows. We always asked for room 235 cause it was a corner room & we made alot of noise & if the cops came, we had a quick escape to the pool area & the beach. Hell, they couldn't catch us ALL scattering in different directions! My uncle would talk to the cops & apologize & then we'd re-group later.
Later Tater,

DQ:

Janie Whatley owned Whatley Brick. She lived in that brick house on the east side of the Circle across from Whatley Brick.

Remember that when A & my Daddy had their fight, it was '56 and they were both around 35. A pirated timber for a living. He'd just go on someone's property, cut their timber and when they bitched, threatened to kill them. That was the way he made most of his money back then.

I'm not sure what Daddy did to piss A off so bad but I'm pretty sure Daddy got hired by "the powers that be" to tell A "to cut that shit out!"

I think dat B's dad was able to trash the dealership at will because Mr. put a couple hundred pounds of frozen mullet under the N. house and trashed the beauty shop for a few weeks.

Yeah, B. was fencing stolen property to New Orleans. One of my best childhood friends was his first cousin, P.. P. is a serious student of B's cleptomania. B's Daddy got busted for using National Guard cargo planes to ship cars to Dothan from the Port of Jacksonville.

Mo' Later!

Roberto,
I think a LOT of people did the same "dry run" to Panam City to check the timeline for themselves...I heard of several doing it!! Yeah...I think Mrs. Simmons actually got away with murder & A helped. It was sooo front page for several days, and then it was just quietly dropped & forgotten about. A probably got more than a monetary pay-off from her on that one. That's another theory I've heard...that they were having an affair. But hell, it seems that ole A was having affairs 24/7! I always thought he was a "dirty ole man". He made my skin crawl. And his son, thinks he walks on water.

And I think that Janie Whatley my be a 2nd cousin to my Mom. Was she related to Christine Whatley? I KNOW that she's Mom's 2nd cousin. I asked Mom today if she remembered the Parrish case. She can't remember why he was bribing a cop (she's like me, but 76 yrs old...& has to think about it for a while!), but she said there was so much underhanded, good ole boy politicin' going on in those days that she wouldn't be surprised if it were true.

Yeah, old A thought he was a real bad-ass, carry a big stick, "Buford Pusser" (Walking Tall) type. Only he wasn't very honest & did "favors" for folks & when he needed to, he'd call in his chips for payback. What did he & your father have words about? That is so strange that A would ride by your house all night, but that doesn't surprise me, either.

I had to lie down for a nap at 6PM last night & awoke at midnight & now I'm WIDE AWAKE. Do you remember when B's dad went to B's dad's car dealership right there across from DHS & vandalized it? I think breaking out the showfloor windows out & pouring a bunch of paint all over the place...including new cars!! I'm no real sure whatever happened about that, either. It was hushed up...except I went to DHS with B. & he was always bragging about it! My cousin worked for Mrs. N. at her in-home beauty shop. I'm sure you know where it is...

Do you remember when B. was burglarizing "old Dothan" homes & stealing antiques from them? He'd even take the stained glass windows out of their frames, too!

This is CSI~Dothan, signing off for now. Any further updates will be immediately forwarded to you!

I think between the two of us, we could write a lot of detective novels....mostly NON-FICTION!

Hope is is well in the pan handle .
Your friend

great photos!
thanks for publishing these. the house in the background visible above the haight hut is 1414 Univ Blvd, the downstairs Left apartment was the residence of famous Tusc rock star Eddie Hinton in his day. I lived in that very same apartment around '71. the haight hut had been torn down then and was an empty lot for a long time before they put a laundromat there. I first lived upstairs directly above the Hinton apartment when Roxy Baucham (sp?) lived downstairs in Eddie's place while husband Don was, ah . . . "away". After she moved, we took the downstairs place. Roger Hagerty aka Dick Foote of Raudelunas lived upstairs in the middle apartment. After we moved out from Hinton's, Craig aka Ron Pate of Raudelunas and Linda Nutt moved into the Hinton apt. This is the building that was torn down shortly after the homecoming parade in '73 when the Raudalunas Marching Vegetable Band marched out right of the parade and up the steps and into the building - http://www.craignutt.com/raudelunas/deals/rmvb.html.

Landlady was watching the parade from her house next door and was so embarrassed that she evicted everyone and tore it down. i remember getting my mind blown when i first went in the haight hut around '69 and they were playing country joe mcdonald's "the vietnam rag" on the radio. it was my first time hearing it and i couldn't believe i was hearing those lyrics on the radio. check joe's place at - http://www.countryjoe.com/cjmbio.htm#3

nope. hunchback guy in "mummywithsunglasses" garb is "Omar Bag-Dada" aka adrian dye, keyboard artist of Raudelunas fame.
