with Levi Kreis, who, in his first appearance on Broadway, won the 2010
Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for portraying Jerry

Drivin' Mr. Shines

Often when I went with my musician friend Johnny Shines on any kind of long trip I was his chaffeur. One exception was our trip to Miami, Florida, for a blues festival. He drove his old Buick, which had such bad brakes that we had to stick our feet out the doors to bring it to a full stop. I drove Johnny to locales as far away as Ann Arbor, Michigan, and to places in the Black Belt of Alabama that seemed to be out of another century. I met Johnny at a benefit for the Freedom Quilting Bee. He was performing. That encounter led to many experiences I’d otherwise never had.

I went with Johnny into homes in the “blackbelt” of Alabama that had no electricity or indoor plumbing. Johnny, Dave Alexander and I visited a house in rural Alabama that used an artesian well for its water supply. I had imbibed some clear liquor from a fruit jar on the porch where they were strumming their guitars. After bending over to get a sip from the well in the yard I stood up and felt like the world was spinning around me accompanied by a symphony of rural blues.

I got to hang out with a lot of great musicians when I was with Johnny. A list would include: Hound Dog Taylor, Mance Lipscomb, Robert Pete Williams, Roosevelt Sykes, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Luther Allison, Albert King, Joe Turner, Eddie Vinson, Bobby Bland, Papa Lightfoot, Little Brother Montgomery, Carey Bell, Otis Rush, Lowell Fulson, Big Mama Thorton, Buddy Guy, Junior Parker, Sunnyland Slim and Son House.

Johnny, his grandson Pete and I went to the Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 1970 in my father's silver Mazda stationwagon. The use of my tiny Volkswagen bug had been ruled out by my parents. As a performer Johnny had been assigned a hotel room. He and his grandson Pete were to share one bed and I was to have the other one. It turned out that Johnny's piano player from Chicago Sunnyland Slim was also booked for the room. Johnny told me later that when I wasn't fazed by having to sleep with Sunnyland that he then knew I wasn't prejudiced. Sunnyland called me his "old bed buddy."

I was surprised that the letter about the festival that I had written to Bob Groom, whose magazine in the United Kingdom had published several articles about Johnny, was used in its entirety in Blues World.

It's last paragraph was: Toward's the Festival's end Son House was talking in the performer's tent. Son is a devoutly religious man and a legend in the blues. He said, "A lot of these people on stage been foolin', just foolin.' That's all. You know, when you want to talk to the Lord so bad, so bad that tears are running down your face, that's feeling the blues. You want the truth. Well, when the Lord give it to you, then you really got the blues.'

Another bluesman whose music had religious overtones was Mississippi Fred McDowell. He lived in a modest house trailer in Como, Mississippi, although he was famous worldwide in blues circles. The Rolling Stones in their album Sticky Fingers covered his song "You Got To Move." Recently Aerosmith recorded a powerful version of it. When Fred visited Johnny I bought him a bottle of virgin bourbon, a libation that I'd remembered he'd liked in Ann Arbor.

The following comes from an article printed in the 1966 MONROE JOURNAL CENTENNIAL EDITION. It is entitled WOMEN HAD TO FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL IN CIVIL WAR.

"Salt was scarce and women of the day dug the earth from the smokehouses, had it washed to procure even a limited supply of the necessity. Those living near the Gulf or bay could boil the sea water and thus have salt. Such things as coffee, cooking soda and sugar became almost unheard of commodities. Coffee was substituted for in the 1861 columns of THE CLAIBORNE SOUTHERNER, a recipe for making coffee from sweet potatoes. The potatoes were cut into small squares, dried in the sun, later parched, ground and boiled. Okra was also used for coffee and tea was made from any number of leaves. Among the leaves used were blackberry, cassena, youpon plant & sassafras.

"Sugar became more and more scarce, so sorghum was substituted for sweetening; for ordinary baking soda the women learned to make a substitute from the ashes of corn cobs. The ashes were placed in a jar and covered in water to stand until clear. By using one part ashes and two parts sour milk, various breads and cakes could be made."

"No oils were available for the type of lamp then in use and 'store' candles gave out. Lard and grease were saved in pans and woolen rags became wicks."
