The property being described begins at a railroad iron at the intersection of 27th Avenue and 12th Street in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

A LEGENDARY guy named Frank ran a beer joint in an old Bar-B-Que Place/Boarding House during the Sixties and into the Seventies.

During the Sixties, the big old two story building near the Mobile & Ohio tracks became known as FRANK'S.

In an earlier day the place had been associated with the M&O passenger station located just south of there where 27th Avenue crosses old 15th Street.

What follows is what came out of my initial Internet inquiry about
FRANK'S SUPPER CLUB.

This first FRANK'S email comes from a cat who played for the Bear back in '69. I checked his information with a cat who was on the '66 Golf Team who told me,"Coach Bryant didn't worry about FRANK'S because it was surrounded by the ghetto and only students went down there. It wasn't like going out to 5 Points where Namath was HOLLYWOOD!!!!"

Hey Reg,
Wasn't Frank's down by the river? If I'm not wrong that wonderful ole' dive
was the only place Coach Bryant would allow team members could go during the
season to quaff a few.
Surely a wonderful bit of Tuscaloosaishness. Glad you got the mural and the
pisser.

Dang, dude! What's it all about?!

A friend from Decatur AL sent me your biz on Frank's.

Frank's!

A few years have come and gone since I last thought of that one.... I've passed your stuff on to another friend in Blacksburg with whom I lingered and carroused i.e., "passed" through T-town in the late 60s. Here's the deal: He and I (and countless other roaches) were both Pake tenants in those mad, mad, mad, mad 60s!

Thanks for all the good Alabama stuff...it appears to me that it will take hours to consume and digest it all - if ever. Regards, and I hope all is well for Lee,

Robo-

Would that would be Frank Sailors, entrepreneur extraordinaire, saloon-keeper, and tow-boat cook?

Jimbo's Daddy (hence, the short-lived "Daddy's Money")?

You know, they passed a law in the state legislature against Frank's enterprising scheme of ordering huge orders of beer from the distributors for his out-of-city-limits club, the Hi-Hat (or Top Hat- I forget- I know Gibson & Delphine McKenzie used to live in the old Hi-Hat Club in Hale County), which allowed him to buy with no city tax. Then he'd tip the truck drivers to drop certain amounts at joints around the city, pocketing a small margin on each case. Took a while before they figgered it out and stopped it, but not before he had a fine home in Alaca Place, and a Cadillac or two.

Frank's demise (one of them) came when he decided to go big time with a huge night club in Huntsville, as the rocket industry was taking off, and he figgered that's where the money was. It broke him so bad he had to go back to cooking on tow-boats, which is where we became friends.

Frank's optimism was infectious, however- looking back on his Huntsville debacle, he told me, "hey, muhfuggah, I didn't do so bad...left town in a $12,000.00 Cadillac, and came back in a $115,000 Greyhound bus"!

Every day Frank was on a boat, he'd have either two pies or two cakes out to serve by 10-11 o'clock, for all us youngsters with raging hormones (and, more often that not, the munchies). Borrowing from a cartoon he saw in Playboy magazine (featuring a black musician on the Carson show), he'd proudly lay out his creations, and with a big grin announce, " This is for all you muhfuggahs in love"!

Mo later...

l
Tuscaloosa's demolished Mobile & Ohio Passenger Station formerly located on 27th Avenue just south of Frank's/Bonhauf/Brothers

I've been plundering Frank's/Bonhauf/Brothers Motorcycle Club Clubhouse for the past few days. Got the LADIES room sign[GI issue- painted front and back] along with the antique urinal, wood of all descriptions and the entire Bob Weston mural of the girl kneeling in bed painted on tongue & groove paneling.
http://thechukker.com

"I don't know what the attraction was but we went there a lot!"

The above is a classic quote from a patron of Frank's/ Bonhauf/Brothers, one of Tuscaloosa's greatest beer joints which will meet the business end of a track hoe this week.

You can't imagine the flashbacks:
Ritchie Tipton and I leaving Frank's for New Orleans & Mobile at the drop of a hat one Friday afternoon in '69 so we could go see the ruins left by Camille.
Other times we'd get a wild hair at Frank's as early as Thursday, pack a backpack, go out to Bill Atkinson's Barber Shop or Nick's on U.S. 11 with a cardboard sign and hitch a ride to New Orleans.I only had to wait 'til dark one time and I still got a ride right down to St. Charles Avenue.

We all had high school friends who were going to Tulane, Loyola and Sophie Newcomb so there was always a dorm room empty on the weekend and a shower and commode at the end of the hall.

A buddy of mine today told me that the first video game he ever saw was at the Bonhauf in about '73 or '74.

I'll publish ALL of your memories of the lovable old dive but please remember what my friend said before he pulled up the recollection of the paradigm shift which occurred when he played his first video game at the Bonhauf,
he told me,
"Wait! Wait! You have to bring up the context in your head!"

This '73 video game was simpler than Pong. It consisted of a space ship being bombarded with streams of asteroids. The only thing you had under your control was the ability to move the spaceship right or left to avoid the electronic channels of asteroids which came at you with increasing speed as the game progressed.

Well, I remember the bowling game with the resin and the shuffleboard puck. With enough beer, that could become deadly.

I loved Frank's/Bonhauf because it was the first place to serve me a beer when I arrived in Tuscaloosa in September of '68. Frank was this short little guy and if you could stand up and put your money on the counter, you could drink a beer at Frank's.

Plundering this old beer joint got me started to thinking about fake ID's from the Sixties. Up until 1977, the Alabama Driver's License was a little paper postcard mailed to you from Montgomery. You had to trim it yourself (Show it to a California or Massachusetts State Trooper and he would yell,"THIS is supposed to be an Alabama Driver's License!").
Well when you were a minor, your license had pink stripes on it. In Alabama, the bouncers would know right off the bat if you'd altered your birthdate because of the pink stripes. In Panama City, it didn't matter at the Red Rooster or Old Dutch. They took ANY fake IDs.

Everybody would buy a license from someone over 21 so you'd always have a good one without the pink stripes. I never had anyone charge me a profit on that deal. You could get a new license for about $5 so you'd give your buddy $5 and he gave you your fake ID.

I'd really appreciate it if you'd share your memories of Frank's/Bonhauf/Brothers because it's a chapter of Tuscaloosa history that will be repeated over and over again.

HEY YA'LL:
That expression on Shaun Alexander's http://www.shaunalexander.org/
face after the Super Bowl said it all,
"No way I'm putting this STUPID
seahawks
uniform on again!"
but another Tuscaloosan certainly triumphed at halftime. I got a little rush when I saw Chuck Leavell http://www.chuckleavell.com/
take his curtain call with the STONES.

Well ya'll, it looks like the ball is definitely now in the President of the "Georgia Pines" Fan Club, LaJuana's court. Please read the messages below & you will see the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the universal promises from the good folks who want to contribute and participate in THE 2006 "GEORGIA PINES" JAM SESSION!!!!

The reason I say it's now up to LaJuana is due to the fact that all of OUR resources are around Dothan and the Panama City Beach "Georgia Pines" crowd wants to jam on the beach. I believe there are many venues where this can occur at PCB such as,for example, an April or May Sunday afternoon jam at Schooners but it would be a whole lot easier to do the gig in Dothan where all of us can find some form of adult supervision before sundown.

When us DOTHAN TIGERS hear dat cannon go off at sundown at Schooners, WE GIT OFF DAH CHAIN!!!!

Robert,

I thought you would be interested that a local rock station, WBLM in Portland, Maine http://www.wblm.com/ , held its annual Super Bowl of Rock contest today (viewers vote by call in). The local favorite Aerosmith has won the last two years, but today another group knocked off the Beatles in the first round and then Queen, then AC-DC, then Aerosmith, and took Pink Floyd in the final. And the winner was Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Thomas Wheatley [Dothan Tiger Class of '66-ed.]

THOMAS:
Not surprising to see SKYNYRD'S enduring popularity way up North in Yankeeland. What's surprising is that it took seven nominations to get Ronnie & the Boys in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.

That is a shocker!

According to Eric Verona, 38, the creator of http://rockthehall.com
which gathered 4172 signatures for an online petition supporting SKYNYRD'S inclusion in Hall of Fame, the stongest support came from CALIFORNIA , NEW YORK and WOMEN, ages 41-45!!!!{Roy Orbison's petition for a postage stamp now has 9649 signatures http://orbison.com }

Just hide and watch your Yankee neighbors there in Portland, Maine, start gobbling up all the SOUTHERN CULTURE they can git that all us barefooted Rebel Sons of Bitches take for granted!
best,
reg

Robert,
As much as I'd love to see all of the guys,I don't think that singing is in the cards for me.
It's been over 20 years since I sang a note and I don't think that I should subject people to mediocrity (mine not theirs).
If you get Buddy,Wilbur,David, and Dean in the same room however I'd go out of my way to be there to see them.
Jimmy Dean and his brother Robert went through a lot of expense and effort to have a "reunion"in Dothan about a year and a half ago,and I wouldn't miss the chance to attend the next one.
