The property being described begins at a railroad iron at the intersection of 27th Avenue and 12th Street in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
A LEGENDARY guy named Frank ran a beer joint in an old Bar-B-Que Place/Boarding House during the Sixties and into the Seventies.
During the Sixties, the big old two story building near the Mobile & Ohio tracks became known as FRANK'S.
In an earlier day the place had been associated with the M&O passenger station located just south of there where 27th Avenue crosses old 15th Street.
What follows is what came out of my initial Internet inquiry about
FRANK'S SUPPER CLUB.
This first FRANK'S email comes from a cat who played for the Bear back in '69. I checked his information with a cat who was on the '66 Golf Team who told me,"Coach Bryant didn't worry about FRANK'S because it was surrounded by the ghetto and only students went down there. It wasn't like going out to 5 Points where Namath was HOLLYWOOD!!!!"

Frank's
Hey Reg,
Wasn't Frank's down by the river? If I'm not wrong that wonderful ole' dive
was the only place Coach Bryant would allow team members could go during the
season to quaff a few.
Surely a wonderful bit of Tuscaloosaishness. Glad you got the mural and the
pisser.

Dang, dude! What's it all about?!
A friend from Decatur AL sent me your biz on Frank's.
Frank's!
A few years have come and gone since I last thought of that one.... I've passed your stuff on to another friend in Blacksburg with whom I lingered and carroused i.e., "passed" through T-town in the late 60s. Here's the deal: He and I (and countless other roaches) were both Pake tenants in those mad, mad, mad, mad 60s!
Thanks for all the good Alabama stuff...it appears to me that it will take hours to consume and digest it all - if ever. Regards, and I hope all is well for Lee,

Robo-
Would that would be Frank Sailors, entrepreneur extraordinaire, saloon-keeper, and tow-boat cook?
Jimbo's Daddy (hence, the short-lived "Daddy's Money")?
You know, they passed a law in the state legislature against Frank's enterprising scheme of ordering huge orders of beer from the distributors for his out-of-city-limits club, the Hi-Hat (or Top Hat- I forget- I know Gibson & Delphine McKenzie used to live in the old Hi-Hat Club in Hale County), which allowed him to buy with no city tax. Then he'd tip the truck drivers to drop certain amounts at joints around the city, pocketing a small margin on each case. Took a while before they figgered it out and stopped it, but not before he had a fine home in Alaca Place, and a Cadillac or two.
Frank's demise (one of them) came when he decided to go big time with a huge night club in Huntsville, as the rocket industry was taking off, and he figgered that's where the money was. It broke him so bad he had to go back to cooking on tow-boats, which is where we became friends.
Frank's optimism was infectious, however- looking back on his Huntsville debacle, he told me, "hey, muhfuggah, I didn't do so bad...left town in a $12,000.00 Cadillac, and came back in a $115,000 Greyhound bus"!
Every day Frank was on a boat, he'd have either two pies or two cakes out to serve by 10-11 o'clock, for all us youngsters with raging hormones (and, more often that not, the munchies). Borrowing from a cartoon he saw in Playboy magazine (featuring a black musician on the Carson show), he'd proudly lay out his creations, and with a big grin announce, " This is for all you muhfuggahs in love"!
Mo later...
