We live in the most wonderful place in the world....and it's going to be shared on screen now.

How proud we all will be when it comes out!!!

Really too bad about Jay Scott.
A very interesting, intelligent person who had seen much more of the world than the rest of us in high school. While most people remember his sax playing, I remember the old right-hand drive Engish taxi he tooled around in when we were teenagers. If my memory serves me correctly, his dad also had an old MG (late 40s early 50s?) that was the envy of everyone who loved wheels.

Robert:

I couldn’t believe the picture of Jerome Hopkins. When I was a freshman at UA my older brother took me out to see Jerome play at a bar on University Blvd called Merle’s.

He was great.

After about 10-15 beers, we walked outside to get some fresh air and heard this “voice” coming from the Baptist church on the corner (when I took my oldest daughter off to UA last year I drove by and it appeared that the old church had been torn down). We snuck up into the balcony and watched this hot little blonde with brass lungs hidden behind a baby grand piano banging out the most amazing gospel music I had ever heard, somewhere between Wet Willie, Aretha Franklin and the Blackwood Bros. Our collective jaws dropped as we sat in the balcony watching “the show.”

After the service was over, she heard our applause and came out to meet us.

“Hi guys, I’m Tick Tock, thanks a million for coming,” she smiled, turning on the heels of her Poll Parrot shoes and breezing out the front door.

That was my first night in Tuscaloosa.

I had just graduated from Lanier High School in Montgomery, was only 17 years old and started college just a few days later. We went back to listen to Jerome many times after that, but until I saw your post, for the life of me I couldn’t remember his name.

I also saw the posts on George Wallace, Jr. and Johnny Botts, both were good musicians and close friends of my older sister at Baldwin Jr. High and Lanier in Montgomery.

Great memories, Robert — many thanks for sending it along.

Hey y'all~

It's been an incredible 36 hours. I probably shouldn't have done it but this morning I told Buie about Jay Scott http://www.myspace.com/jaycscott www.myspace.com/fiddledeedeeme
over the air on WTBC.http://WTBC1230.com
It hit Buie right in the gut but he immediately recovered & went on to praise Jay's work.

We pretty much dominated fifty minutes of radio today.

We started off with BIG WHISKEY CHIEF ...uh, I mean Chief Bigwater from Boggy Bayou http://www.playgroundrecordingstudio.com/
rapping about the European release of Jimmy "Orion" Ellis' GEORGIA PINES.

Then Buie & McCarty got on the air & then right around
THE LITTLE BLUE PILL
It got sketchy.
(you'll see when you read the transcript next week)

Phoebe Lewis wiped the sleep out of her eyes and saved the day for us with her wonderful description of Jerry Lee's business & his life.

The only thing I regret is that I'm gonna have a lot of transcription to do neck week.

best,
rr

Dueling Pianos

Brown's Corner Dueling Piano Bar and Grill is a new edition to downtown Tuscaloosa. / CW | Katie Bennett

With downtown Tuscaloosa being revamped, Brown’s Corner Dueling Piano Bar and Grill is open and ready for business.

Keith and Heath Wyatt, former owners of Steamer’s Restaurant for 13 years and now co-owners of the new bar, have presented Tuscaloosa with a unique twist to a bar, bringing something fun and relaxing to the table.

The brothers fell in love with the concept after frequent trips to Rum Runners, a dueling piano bar in Sandestin, Fla.http://www.rumrunnersusa.com/

Their passion for the piano bar made them think Tuscaloosa needed something interactive like this, they said.

A typical dueling piano show consists of two pianists who play, sing and perform comedy. Songs are played upon request, either written on a napkin or piece of paper, along with a tip, Heath said.

“Brown’s Corner was the perfect location to start the piano bar,” Heath said. “It’s in the center of downtown Tuscaloosa on the corner of University Boulevard and Greensboro Avenue.”

The “dueling” is what makes the experience at the piano bar so unique. Each pianist will take the role of either the “good guy” or the “bad guy.” For example, when the good guy plays “Yea Alabama,” the bad guy will play Tennessee’s fight song, “Rocky Top.” This gets the crowd exhilarated and interactive, Heath Wyatt said.

The live music and the crowd singing along to the songs at the top of their lungs, keeps the energy up and the people coming. On Friday and Saturday there’s a cover around 10 p.m., anywhere from $3 to $5.

Ashlee McMillian, a junior majoring in nursing, went the dueling piano bar at Brown’s Corner for the first time and said she was in awe of the different energy the bar had.
“It was great because the bar gave off such a comfortable vibe, which made everyone seem to really let loose,” McMillian said. “I feel as though people of all ages would have a genuinely fun time.”

The piano bar attracts a very diverse crowd of all ages. Older clientele come for dinner, and then the college crowd comes strolling in for the show. The shows are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Other than the unique entertainment, Brown’s Corner Dueling Piano Bar and Grill is also a full restaurant, with burgers, salads and sandwiches.

“One, Two, Three and a Half” is the name of their happy hour, which runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. The name comes from their specials: $1 beer, $2 well drinks, $3 wine and half-off appetizers.

Jesse Greener, a sophomore majoring in communications and public relations, said he has frequented the dueling piano bar at Brown’s Corner since their grand opening.

“The atmosphere is so unique with the pianos, no matter what your taste in music is, you will enjoy it,” Greener said. “Whatever you request they play, anything from Oldies to Snoop Dogg.”

"GOOD MORNING, HEARTACHE."

Irene higginbotham / ervin drake / dan fisher

Good morning heartache
You old gloomy sight
Good morning heartache
Thought we said goodbye last night
I turned and tossed until it seems you have gone
But here you are with the dawn
Wish I'd forget you, but you're here to stay
It seems I met you
When my love went away
Now everyday I stop I'm saying to you
"Good morning heartache, whats new?"

Stop haunting me now
Cant shake you nohow
Just leave me alone
Ive got those Monday blues
Straight to Sunday blues
Good morning heartache
Here we go again
Good morning heartache
You're the one
Who knows me well

Might as well get used to you hanging around
Good morning heartache
Sit down

Hi there from the Pacific Northwest.

My Name is Nan MacDonald, and I'm doing research on my late grandfather Philip L. Royal who passed away in 1975 in Northport. Born Philip O. Jones on May 22, 1903 ~ Philip changed his name (legally ) to Phil L. Royale sometime in the early 1940's ~

Philip was a Jazz Drummer and lived in the Northport / Tuscaloosa county area from the early 1950's to his death in December 1975. Sometime between 1943 and 1950 he cut a couple of singles ~ one was "Song of India". It would be a freak of fate that you would have any knowledge of Philip, but I thought maybe you could post or pass on my inquiry to any other local ole time Jazz folks in your area.

Thanks

RR~

You are welcome! I have always loved to hear Rock crooning "I'm Callin'", but didn't realize until I got the Beaverteeth CDs that it was Jay playing sax on that song. What a tremendous job he did! I am very sorry to hear of his passing. & my thoughts & prayers are with his family. He was a most talented person who will be missed by many.

I have enjoyed reading your blog and catching up with the people I grew up with.
Some ,I have the greatest respect for and a few ,I could take or leave -but mostly a veritable who's who of wonderful musicians.
JAY SCOTT
http://www.myspace.com/jaycscott

Got some bad news from David Adkins this afternoon. His brother-in-law, Jay Scott, passed away this morning in PCB. Jay was one of the best sax players to ever come out of Dothan. He played sax on "I Love the Nightlife" by Alicia Bridges. It sold over four million . Jay also played with Dionne Warwick, Melissa Manchester, Alabama, Paul Davis and on Skynyrd's "What's Your Name."
http://www.myspace.com/jaycscott

Gavin Whatley
I had the privilege of playing a few times with Jay and his Dad back in the seventies. They were both amazing musicians.

Rodney Justo
I'm sorry to hear about Jay. He was a real charachter.
I met him when he was playing with Satyr in Dothan at Thee Club.
David Adkins was going with his sister, the beautiful Laura Scott.
When Beaverteeth was recording its/our first album, it only made sense to ask Jay to play sax on a Randall Bramblett song called "I'm Callin'". I remember his ... Read Moreresponse when I told him..."you know how people complain that they never get a chance to play what they feel like playin? Well, here's your chance, we're gonna' go till you play somethin' you're proud of"........it took a while, but it goes to show that if you give people an opportunity to give you their best, they usually won't stop till they give it to you.
Peace Jay

Friday works for me...I'll be on ready...also, I've got a special place in my heart for Jerry Lee Lewis...the first 45rpm's I ever bought when I got my first record player was Jerry Lee's "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On," (along with Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally", "Tutti Frutti" and "Lucille")...also I did the original artwork for the book cover, "Great Balls of Fire: The Uncensored Story of Jerry Lee Lewis" (William Morrow and Co.) by Myra Lewis and co-authored by Murray Silver...Also Sherri was in Dubai last week and brought back a local newspaper http://www.gmanews.tv/story/170621/jerry-lee-lewis-to-release-new-single weds, august 26, 2009) that had a AP write-up on Jerry Lee (entitled "GREAT BALLS OF JERRY LEE!") about his upcoming single, "Mean Old Man" and his tour this autumn to Brazil, Las Vegas and Europe...I've been out of touch with Buddy lately and looking foreward to hearing his voice!... mm

Hey!...this is uncharted territory for me...I don't know what it means (good, bad, or average)...

I have been getting a lot of responses from a lot of people...wish the whole video could be shown, but part is a lot better than nothing!...Thanks Robert...U-da Man!...Best regards, mm
