Somebody with the evacuees here in Tuscaloosa contacted my boss, Lee Pake, yesterday. Lee agreed to let them have five houses for evacuees but they never called back. Lee was wondering who would sign some sort of lease to take legal responsibility .
Archie Bird was also contacted by some of the same people yesterday and he agreed to let them have two houses but nobody has called him back.
Here are the addresses:

1910 and 1920 Ridgehaven on Canyon Lake- go out Highway 11 and turn left at the Parade Station between Cottondale and I-20/59

2722 26th Street: located off 30th Avenue near Kaulton. Ready to move into. Downed tree near front yard. Power on. Water can be turned on illegally. Central air. Three bedrooms.Stove and refrigerator

26O7 21st Street: located down from the jail off 26th Avenue. probably still needs carpet work.Stove and refrigerator. Central air. Power on. Water can be turned on illegally. Could be a four bedroom.

1932 30th Avenue: 1932 30th Avenue: located a block south of Floyd's on 30th Avenue. Lots of trash in the yard. Pretty sure it's ready to move into. Not sure about power. Central air. 3 bedrooms.

#6 Short 24th Ave. E.: just behind the Union Hall off Paper Mill Road [25th Avenue E.]. two bedroom. not sure about power. Tenant just moved out.

10315 Jones Road.: Northport just off Charlie Shirley Road by The Brown Bag. Tenant just moved out, needs cleaning and carpet. I have a lot of new carpet and used rugs.

I also know of some shacks and other places people could be housed.

Let me know how we can get house keys to these people.

He got $5 a pop at the DIRTY BIRD back in June and the line went on forever. Unfortunately for Billy Joe, I broke in line and got the one below for free thanks to Jimmy Dean!}

Brian and Mike also made a prediction that DEEP SOUTH would sign with country label because in this day & age, SOUTHERN ROCK = COUNTRY MUSIC!

P.S. I haven't been able to party with any of the evacuees yet, however, I met my first one this morning and gave him three baseball gloves for his 11 year old son and showed him where the Riverside boat landing was located along with a great place to go creek banking within walking distance of the evacuee shelter. That put a smile on his face.

Absurdio.
That record was cut during the period of time that was the year between the time The Candymen broke up and ARS started.
I was back in Tampa but my thoughts would be

Of course logical thought would be Hey that's ARS !
Exactly......that's how ARS came to be.
It was Buddy"s (how do you pluralize that?)brainchild that he could create a band from what he considered the top musicians in the south, and that we could make a living doing record sessions while working on our own music.

HEY YA'LL:
I just got off the phone with Miz Agnes who owns WOOF radio in Dothan .http://www.woofradio.com/ Her daughter, Jeannie, evacuated to Baton Rouge where two of her daughters attend LSU. Jeannie's already back home in Mandeville now. Her former in-laws who live in Covington have also returned to their homes.

Mandeville got hit by wind but no flood from Ponchartrain. Of course the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway [U.S. 90] going to New Orleans was destroyed. All of the trees in Jeannie's neighborhood are gone but her house is O.K. and she's back in town.

3000 are homeless in Bayou La Batre. I haven't heard from Collette or Greg but I did see a reporter on TV across the street from their house on Alabama 188 showing the flooding at the bridge so it ain't good.

From what I understand, we've got about 600 evacuees in town right now & they are in a gypsy mode, not knowing where they're heading next. My boss's wife, Penny, works for the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education and she registered all the kids for school today, even if their parents said they were leaving town. The ones who stay for this football/Labor Day weekend will enroll their children in school on Tuesday, September 6.

A lot of people have asked about how they can help. I haven't talked to Jeannie yet but she is an elementary school librarian in Mandeville. The Mandeville Elementary School website is down right now I'll talk to her between now and Tuesday and try to figure out what the kids need in Mandeville. http://mandevilleelementary.stpsb.org/index.html

Penny will keep me informed about the progress of the evacuees' children in our Tuscaloosa City Schools. We hope to welcome these students to class on Tuesday. I'll let ya'll know what's happening.

Please don't focus on what is going on in New Orleans!!

What is really important is finding these people a new home and welcoming them into our community.

Unfortunately, I happen to know what I am talking about when it comes to death and destruction. Days after a disaster, people will be sitting around moaning and groaning like they are living through some unending funeral. They don't even think about how an ice chest filled with cold beer, a bar-b-que grill tuned up with some meat&veggies and a transister radio with fresh batteries blasting out some rock 'n roll can help a clean-up or a relocation.

If people need anything, they need a GOOD PARTY!!!!!

EL ABSURDIO continues to have questions about the ARS discography so some of ya'll{LIKE BUDDY, ROCKIN' RODNEY, NIX & OLE OX} take a few moments of your prescious time and please respond to his important inquiries. greetings roberto, thanks for the quick response. i don't know if i would have called my question important in light of everything going on around the gulf coast but give my thanks to buddy and rodney for the info. i'll keep my eyes open for the "3 coins" record. perhaps one more (multiple part) question? do the guys remember who played on the sessions? was this the beginning of ars? obviously j.r. is playing - his guitar is very distinct. was dean, robert, barry or paul there? was it an early studio one session? i appreciate your time. thanks to everyone, jim.

p.s. on a side note. a good friend of mine played american bandstand back in the 60's (remember "wild weekend" and the rockin' rebels?). he tells the exact same story as rodney about having to sign the check back over to dick clark. maybe i'll take him to lunch........

In about '69 or '70 record companies had too much money so they were looking for anything that might make them even MORE money.
As a result of this,remember Buddy Buie and J.R. Cobb were one of the top songwriting duos in the country,they got a deal as recording artists with I think either Capitol or Liberty Records.
Of course. I heard the record but have only a faint recollection of what it sounded like.
I think that Buddy sang it.
An even cooler record to have, would be 3 Coins in the Fountain sung Ray Charles style by the aforementioned Buddy Buie,which I have somewhere on tape.

Sorry I took so long to respond about American Bandstand but here are some things that come to mind about our appearance.
1)Dick Clark was very nice to us and came into our dressing room whiLe we were getting made up and asked us if there was anything that we thought would be interesting for him to bring up.We had recently come back from England where we used The Beatles equipment to record a song called HOPE,which had been produced by Graham Nash.
We were on tour with Orbison and didn't want to have to unload, and then load, all of our equipment, so Graham called Paul Mc Cartney to see if it was OK if we used their stuff.By the way their equipment was there because they were recording Sergeant Pepper at the time so that's what we decided we would talk about.
Let's face it.....give me a better time to name drop and impress the folks back home.
Any way, when we finished Georgia Pines ,Dick Clark comes up to me to ask me about there being a "rumor" that we used The Beatles to record I explained that they were recording Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts CUB BLAND. I think that the guys started wondering how I had been designated the official spokesman for the band.

2-We also mentioned to Dick in the dressing room how he reminded us of a popular dick jockey/promoter from Birmingham named Dave Roddy who we all liked a lot.He promoted shows at the Oporto Armory where for some reason we always sounded great and we probably played there once every 6 weeks.Dick knew who he was

3-The technicians were on strike at ABC which was the network that carried American Bandstand, and after Dick introduced us and we started to lip synch the song, the tape stopped and we had to start over.This time he sat in the audience to introduce us.While we were waiting to get started Dick sat next to a girl and started talking to her and her name happened to be Candy which gave him a "coincidence" to use in his intro.

4- Here's the worst part-----as if you got paid a lot to do the show ,(I think Union scale was about $365.00 for the act and since we were a band we had to split it 5 ways) you actually had to sign the check back over to either ABC, or Dick Clark Productions so you don't even get paid scale.
Oh by the way it's also the best part........because I was also in another Union (in addition to The American Federation of Musicians I was a member of the Americam Federation of Television and Radio Artists) I got paid about $400.00 which I didn't have to sign over......Sorry Robert and Dean. I'll buy you guys lunch next time I see you.Robert, since I haven't seen you in about 10 or 12 years lunch will probably cost about $400.00 by that time, so, we'll be even.

greetings roberto,
i came across your web site today while doing a search and i wound up spending most of the day at the computer going through your site. terrific and fascinating reading. i have been an ars, classics iv, candymen, southern music fan for years and it's good to see that robert nix hasn't fallen of the face of the earth and is actually still playing! great to read the rememberances from rodney justo and all of the other great musicians and singers that i love but never got a chance to hear play live.
any way on to my question. i recently picked up a 45 on capital records by buie and cobb. the songs are "don't tell the folks in memphis" b/w "puddin' " you obviously are an authority on buddy buie's music{say what!: ed.}. i have never seen or heard of this 45 listed in any ars discography. do you have any info on this record? who are the backing musicians? is that buddy singing on the a-side? (the b side is an instrumental much in the classics iv vein). any info would be appreciated. thanks and look forward to hearing from you.
