I don't know if its the excesses of the 60s and 70s or early dementia but I would have sworn I never had a record on United Artist as an artist. WRONG!!! I thought I made a demo of these songs in order to give Wilbur an idea of how I wanted them sung. WRONG!!!
If anyone out there remembers circumstances concerning this, please reply!!

We all called him Shakin' Bill, since he stood rock still on stage. We (the James Gang and the Candymen) were always running into each other back then on the road since Buddy booked both groups, and often here in Dothan, so I remember Shakin' Bill well, but only knew him casually. I remember him as a quiet, introspective and obviously intelligent guy who was always friendly to be around. From the time I was around him and from what John Rainey told me about him, I realized he had issues inside known only to himself. The last time I saw him was somewhere backstage, probably in the late sixties I think somewhere in Tennessee. He was playing for the Classics IV and we were on the show too. He was gentlemanly as usual, but you know how it is backstage, hectic and such, so we didn't get a chance to talk. I liked Shakin' Bill, admired his bass playing, and was sorry when I heard he had passed away.

TUSCALOOSA Katrina displaced even New Orleans royalty: Art Neville is staying with some of his family at Tuscaloosa’s Sheraton Four Points hotel for the near future.

They’re here partly because this city was an easy drive from the Crescent City, yet far enough away from Katrina’s main path, and partly because of their long friendship with Tuscaloosan Fred DeLoach.

“I figured I might as well go where I know someone," Neville said.

The keyboardist and elder statesman of The Neville Brothers and The Meters was in Syracuse, N.Y., playing a series of gigs with Bob Weir and Rat Dog (remnants of the Grateful Dead) as Katrina began its approach. When his wife, Lorraine, and 9-year-old daughter, Amelia, began to feel uneasy, they called DeLoach.

“Lorraine called me up and said she didn’t want to be stuck uptown [where their home is located] with no power," DeLoach said. He had reserved rooms at the Royal Sonesta for that weekend, and they could have them. Staying there was Lorraine’s original plan, but then Katrina took a turn for the worse.

“I was watching on the TV, and it looked like it was heading straight for us," Neville said.

So he called up DeLoach and urged the friend to help get his family out. DeLoach offered the use of a company plane, but Lorraine chose to drive instead. With Amelia and a couple of friends in tow, they reached the Sheraton about four-and-a-half hours after leaving on the Saturday before Katrina hit.

“It was kind of hit and run at the beginning, trying to figure out how soon to leave," Neville said.

The Druid City opened its arms to the Neville family, as it has to the band in the past. The Neville Brothers played a pair of legendary all-night gigs at a club located in the old L&N train station in the early 1980s, about the time Rolling Stone voted the band’s album “Fiyo on the Bayou," a mix of R&B, funk and Aaron’s quavering falsetto matched to brotherly harmonies, the best album of 1981.

Aaron’s solo recordings, including hits with “Everybody Plays the Fool" and a duet with Linda Ronstadt on “Don’t Know Much," helped raise the band’s profile through the ’80s and ’90s, as did hit albums for the band such as “Yellow Moon" and “Brother’s Keeper."

The Neville Brothers played a headlining concert in 1992 at Riverside Amphitheatre on the University of Alabama campus, with fellow New Orleans legends The Radiators opening the show.

“Here in Tuscaloosa, they’ve treated us very, very kind," Neville said.

“I’ve been knowing Fred a long time, but the rest of the people have been really great to us, too."

The scope of the disaster was beyond his imagining. Neville grieves for the city where he’s lived all his life and for the people. But he’s pleased to know that his family is safe, including a sister; 24-year-old son, Ian, who was playing music in Brazil; and his three musical siblings in The Neville Brothers, Aaron, Cyril and Charles.

Aaron is with his family in Memphis, Charles is in Massachusetts, and Cyril is with family in Austin, Texas.

They’ll reunite this weekend in Nashville for a massive charity concert to be aired simultaneously on MTV, VH1 and CMT on Saturday. The Neville Brothers are among a long list of stars, including The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Kanye West, Brian Wilson, Melissa Etheridge, Alan Jackson, Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Trent Reznor, Green Day, Usher and The Dave Matthews Band.

The Neville Brothers also plan to donate a portion of the royalties from their newest album, “Walkin’ in the Shadows of Life," to the American Red Cross, with their record label, EMI, matching whatever the band gives.

But that’s about as far into the future as the Neville family, currently of Tuscaloosa, can see.

“The way it looks, it’s going to be difficult to go back there," Neville said. “I hope we can rebuild again, but it’s going to be a heavy job.

“Now we see how important that city is. We’ve got to keep praying and see if America is going to bring it back.

I once had a condo in the French Quarter - from 1985
to 1990 - a huge living room/kitchen with a loft
bedroom. It was on St Philip St between Bourbon and
Dauphine in a building built about 1810. It was
stumbling distance (about 200 ft) from Jean LaFitte's
Blacksmith Shop on the corner of St Philip and
Bourbon. I started and/or ended many a Friday and
Saturday night on one of the barstools there. (Back in
my drinking days - long since gone).

I hate to see this tragedy, even though we all knew it
would eventually happen. The Quarter surprisingly
didn't flood like most of the rest of the city ....
The French were smarter than we gave them credit for,
and built on the some of the only "high ground."

Do you know how Canal St got it's name? After the
British took over, the French wanted to build a canal
around the Quarter to keep the British out! I could be
wrong about that - maybe the British wanted to keep
the French in!

They're trying to chase everybody out of the Bywater now. The N.O. cops came through yesterday in black unmarked Cadillacs armed to the teeth and used bullhorns and banged on doors and wore their black SWAT team uniforms and told everybody that if they didn't come out, they wouldn't be able to keep their pets when they would be eventually forced to evacuate but only the fools listened to them. I know for a fact that nikkozikon is from new orleans and you sir don't care about the rebuilding of our great city...we can blame and blame and blame now til we are blue in the face but it doesn't help that people have NO HOMES everyone wants to go home and pick up their lives. Not to mention EVERYONE is to blame...EVERYONE could have done things differently...that doesn't change the fact that there are still people and pets soaking in the toxic gumbo...I am appalled that you would wreck the morale of our citizens hope to come back better than ever. I HOPE for our sakes that you do not return! Our city would be better without you...pick up the pieces before we argue...we argue now it's only going to take longer for us to rebuild.

Tonight I was watching FOX again & I swear I saw those same people staggering down Bourbon "in da Qtr.", high & dry!
The FOX news folks said that "da Qtr." was built on higher ground. Now, I don't know if that's true or not, but it show did look high & dry to me.....and...... "you can't have no curfew in da Qtr.!".... GOD bless 'em!
Some people might say that now is not the time for humor. I think most of da good folks of NOLA don't mind, so long as it's not disrespectful (& if you throw in a little prayer). So, I'll stop now for a moment of silence...........................................................

"We walked from the Fairmont to our house through the French Quarter on Tuesday. The Quarter was very dry and so was most of the Marigny .There were a number of fences down, trees blown over, tree limbs all over the place. A few shutters down , some roof damage, etc. But all in all it looked like it was something we can work with. Frenchman and Touro, Pauger had water between Burgundy and ST Claude. Rampart had water over the curb but didn't seem to get any higher. St Claude was mid knee deep. The main threat was the looters armed and dangerous. There was no way we could stay. We left for Texas Wednesday at noon and had people beating on our car as we went over the Crescent City Connection bridge. It was scary as hell. I am still at work. I have to deliver a refrigerator to the Pinecrest house before sundown.
Just saw something really unusual. A slow moving motorcade, made up of a pick-up truck with the back packed with people followed by eight cars, all with Louisiana plates, drove slowly by our office. Each vehicle was packed with people and they all looked astonished. I think they were looking for some place to go for the night but they seemed to know where they were going but it looked almost like a funeral motorcade without the motorcycle cops.

Approximately 200 children of Katrina evacuees have already been enrolled in the Tuscaloosa City Schools and some will begin attending class on Tuesday. I don't believe most of them had returned to school from summer vacation so they will probably be about three weeks behind the local students with their lessons. The Tuscaloosa County Schools are enrolling evacuees' children at the shelter at the Mercedes-Benz factory.
Our company, Pake Realty, is providing eight homes free of charge to evacuees. A family of nine will move into a large home we are remodeling on Pinecrest in the community of Holt next week. Realtors in Tuscaloosa are working the hotels to find families to occupy empty apartments and homes.
Yesterday I brought a 5ft. by 8ft. trailer of toys and sporting goods equiptment to the shelter at the University of Alabama Rec Center. It was there that I met my first evacuee. I gave him three baseball gloves and told him about recreational opportunities in the neighborhood of the Rec Center. This guy was a glass repairman in New Orleans and it looks like he'll be going to work next week with a local glass company.
I was told this morning that a woman in Tuscaloosa went to Wal Mart, bought a basketball goal set, paid for it and ordered that it be shipped to the evacuees. The clerk at Wal Mart gave her her money back and said that Wal Mart in Tuscaloosa would pay for the goal and ship it for her for free.
Keep us in mind folks. There's a whole lot of work to be done and spirit of Kesey and Grogan can be seen on the quiet streets of Tuscaloosa today.
