Hey y'all:
If any of y'all ever feel the need to go to counting your blessings,
go hang out in B'ham like I did today.
I wanted to go the Pompeii exhibit
images courtesy of http://www.pompeiibirmingham.com/index2.html
but when I got there it was sold out for the day so I got a ticket for 1:30 tomorrow.
When I started south down Lurleen today on my way to B'ham,
I also started thinking about this email I got last week
from this old girlfriend of mine
I haven't heard from in a coon's age.
I thought to myself, "Well, you may not love me now but
you're about the greatest girl in the world because you saved me from heartbreak!"
So I'm leaving T-town this morning for B'ham &
I decide to drive down 82 to Farley's Grocery
(the only gas station where I've ever stopped in my life and had to use an outhouse)
& turned left on Hagler-Coaling Road &
It was like Bob, Laurie, Simon and the gang were heading for the springs at Big Sandy.
I drove down to the Big Sandy Springs
on the Westervelt property.
Then I drove through SOUR DIRT COUNTRY to Coaling and New Asia Church
then on to old U.S. 11 to the Interstate
(Paul Jr. put a cement plant in the old site at Cedar Cove)
drove down to Bucksville and then cut over to Eastern Valley Road
and came into Bessemer looking for the BRIGHT STAR.http://www.birminghammenus.com/brightstar/
After a Bud, salad with SUPERB blue cheese, fried green tomatoes, Greek style potatoes and the Greek style snapper filet at the Bright Star,
I headed east down Dartmouth Avenue through Little Vietnam
which then turned into Jefferson Avenue
which then turned into 1st Avenue North
so I got to go by the Arlington Mansion which was Wilson's headquarters.
The Pompeii Exhibit was sold out.
I bought a ticket for tomorrow
but I'm gonna meet up with some old buds so I'm looking forward to it.
Please pray for everyone in Birmingham
because they are sitting on top of an absolutely total
economic catastrophe.
best,
rr

LET FREEDOM RING
This morning I pulled into the parking lot
Of my ancient office inside Archie's Whorehouse
And saw a dust devil swirling around a smashed ICEE cup
Right in the center of my space.
I took it as an omen,
Like the time a painted bunting
http://www.birdsofoklahoma.net/Paintedbunting.htm
perched right next to my head
When I was blue
And looked me in eye like God.
I thought about tomorrow,
July The Fourth.
Yes, the sun will come up tomorrow,
Jesus will roll away the stone
And if he sees his shadow tomorrow morning,
We'll have six more weeks of summer!
Let's shoot off some firecrackers for Jesus!
Let's do some fireworks to uphold the Kingdom of God
Or maybe even just to destroy it.
And I...
then I thought about those 4 original heads.
http://skypilotclub.com
Each one from my Daddy's generation,
Not a draftee in the bunch.
The original dropouts
Who discovered that there was a little organized crime
In every organization.
And I thought about my Daddy,
Working his ass off on top of a mountain of bennies,
And I thought about Kesey
http://key-z.com
and Grogan
http://increvablesanarchistes.org/
[that's grogan on the left]
playing imaginary football
As they ran down Haight Street,
And as soon as I got out of my truck
I looked up into the clouds of my Alabama SKY
And thanked the Good Lord for all the times
He let me get high with some nooky.
Then I knew it was time to go to work.
Ain't love grand?!!!!!
Is this not a great country or what?!!!!!!!!!!!!
-- Robert Register
34 yr. old Col. Richard H. Smith of Belle Meade Park, Nashville, TN
convinced the guys in my Daddy's unit that bombing
"is just like football-
you have to practice all week to play on Saturday."
It took Cap. Melvin A. Anderson
of 2120 North 44th St. in Seattle, Wash., a
former reporter for the Seattle Times and
group bombardier to tell the group’s
success secret:
“We’ve just got to hand it to the Old
Man.
Colonel Smith get the guys
all steamed up. Our main job for months
has been on German bridges and the
Germans are not dumb. They know that
when we miss a bridge the first time, we
probably will keep coming back until we
bust it.
That’s been the Colonel’s best training
plea. The guys have convinced themselves
through him that they must practice so they
won’t have to keep going back to the same
target."
Bombing accuracy is calculated on the
basis of an imaginary circle with a 600 foot
radius. Its center is the heart of the
objective. An Air Force announcement
explains: “When bombers of a large
formation all place their loads within this area
the score is 100%”.
Here's what Anderson had to say about it:
“You know it sounds like college ‘rah-rah’ but
competition really works with these kids. The
colonel builds up that idea too. It gets so hot
they begin betting on their targets. Then they
can’t afford to miss.
Another thing, our bombardiers navigate
all the way out to the target. That gives us a
double check. Our group has never yet had a
formation bomb the wrong target.
There’s another thing.
There are ten
clubs on our field.
Every one of them has a
bar.
That helps a helluva lot.
If you think the
other guy is a bum, you can get a drink and
tell him so to his face. They get their grudges
off their chests and don’t worry about them.
Again there’s Colonel Smith. We used
to be able to come back and tell a
commanding officer a lot of malarkey about
why we missed or could not finish a bomb
run, but you simply can’t kid Colonel Smith,
he knows all about it."
Like most of the group’s top officers,
Smith is a combat veteran with 67 missions
to his credit.
His deputy group command, Lt. Col.
Charles F. Cassidy of (1249 Fillmore St.)
Denver, Colorado, has 57 missions.

My next entry into the SKYPILOT CLUB cookbook contest:
I live alone so I basically do as I please in the kitchen.
I spend most of my time in the kitchen snacking & washing dishes but
I do my best to spend two weekends a month holed up in the house taking
care of business in the kitchen.I am not writing this to advocate any sort of lifestyle or dietary discipline.
I just hope it helps someone who lives alone.
In a perfect world, I get to go to the store on Saturday.
I spend about $90 a week but I can skip a week with no problem & have plenty of food to spare.I used to buy two pounds of on-sale shrimp a week but now I'm about up to around over 3.
When I get home from the store on Saturday, I start the shrimp boil.
I cook corn, potatoes & onions in the boiling water with bags of shrimp boil spices,
Old Bay Seasoning, lemon quarters and ground red pepper.
As soon as the water starts getting hot after I first put the shrimp in, I start sampling the shrimp by scooping them out of the boil and putting them on ice.
I take shrimp out early, in the middle & at the end.
It makes a good mix.
I strow my secret Cajun seasoning all over them befo' I peal. They look so pretty pealed in their own container there on the top shelf of your refrigirator so go ahead & plan on losing some to the moochers - especially if the cocktail sauce is nearby on the same shelf.
A bowl of cocktail sauce will last for two weekends. I use cheap ketchup, good horseradish, lemon juice, a little balsamic vinagrette , little hot sauce & a little Dale's http://www.dalesseasoning.com/
I also buy meat on Saturday.
Generally, I get a big piece of beef and/or a whole chicken and/or some pork.I marinate in varying combinations of lemon juice, cheapest balsamic vinagrette & Dale's.
I can cook on either Saturday or Sunday but Sunday's best because the meat gets to marinate. (I sometimes keep a few skrimpfish out to marinate & skewer & braise just before putting the meat on.)
As soon as the stuff you've grilled is cool, put it in freezer bags and freeze it.
Any vegetable you boil with the shrimp freezes & defrosts with no problem and retains full flavor.
A great way to cook the leftovers is to defrost the meat, take it off the bone & saute it in a pan with butter & spices.
Then you can use it for burritos, nachos or echiladas!best,
